Registration takes around five minutes and helps us stay connected with retired British Transport Police dogs and their owners.

Retirement can sometimes bring unexpected challenges. If your retired police dog needs significant vet’s treatment, urgent care or other exceptional support, the Rail Dogs Fund may be able to help.

Our online application helps us understand your circumstances and ensure your request is considered by the Trustees.

  • Registering your retired dog helps us continue to recognise and support the dogs that have served with British Transport Police.

    It allows us to maintain an accurate record of retired dogs, understand how many dogs are reaching retirement and plan our fundraising and support accordingly.

    Registration also means we can stay connected with you and your dog as they enjoy the next chapter of their life.

  • The registration process is simple and should only take a few minutes.

    We ask for some basic details about you and your retired dog, including their name, breed, service history and retirement details.

    This information helps us understand the retired dog community we support and ensures we have the right information should you ever need to contact us in the future.

  • Your information will be treated confidentially and used only for purposes connected with the work of the Railway Dogs Benevolent Fund.

    This includes maintaining our retired dog register, communicating important updates, understanding future support needs and administering assistance where appropriate.

    We will never share your personal details without your permission, except where we are legally required to do so.

  • Once registered, your dog becomes part of the wider Rail Dogs family.

    We hope to stay connected with owners and handlers, share updates about the Fund, celebrate the achievements of retired dogs and keep you informed about opportunities to support the community.

    Registration also means that if circumstances change and your dog needs assistance, we already have a record of their history to help us respond more effectively.

  • The Railway Dogs Benevolent Fund provides support for retired British Transport Police dogs where there is a significant or exceptional need.

    This may include unexpected veterinary treatment, urgent welfare needs or other circumstances where financial assistance would make a meaningful difference to the wellbeing of a retired dog.

    Every situation is different, and we encourage owners to contact us if they are unsure whether support may be available.

  • The Fund is not intended to replace the normal costs of owning and caring for a retired dog.

    We would not usually provide support for routine expenses such as food, everyday care, standard insurance costs, vaccinations, preventative treatments or general maintenance.

    Our aim is to help when a retired police dog faces an exceptional challenge or when an owner is experiencing genuine difficulty meeting significant costs.

  • All applications are carefully considered by the Trustees of the Railway Dogs Benevolent Fund.

    Each request is reviewed individually, taking into account the circumstances of the retired dog, the nature of the support requested, any supporting information provided and the funds available at the time.

    Our aim is always to provide assistance wherever possible while ensuring the Fund remains able to support retired dogs in the future.

  • To help us understand your request, we will ask for information about your retired dog, the reason support is needed and the costs involved.

    This may include details of any veterinary assessment, estimates, invoices or other supporting evidence relevant to your application.

    Providing this information helps the Trustees make a fair and informed decision as quickly as possible.
